Dog waste bag dispensers supporting responsible pet ownership

Whether you're heading out for a walk along the foreshore, enjoying one of Mandurah's many parks or exercising your dog at a local reserve, cleaning up after your pet is one of the simplest ways to help keep our community clean, healthy, and welcoming. 

To support responsible dog ownership, the City has installed dog waste bag dispensers at selected public bins across Mandurah. Dispensers are fitted with sensors that help monitor stock levels, making it easier to identify when bags need replacing. 

While the City provides these bags as a convenience, dog owners are reminded that they are legally responsible for cleaning up after their pets in public places and should always carry their own waste bags when out and about. Failure to pick up after a dog in public can result in a fine. 

Why picking up dog waste matters 

Dog waste is more than just an unpleasant sight. Left on the ground, it can pose risks to people, other dogs, and the environment. Dog waste may contain bacteria and other disease-causing organisms, some of which can survive in soil for extended periods if waste is not properly disposed of. 

By picking up after your dog and disposing of waste correctly, you're helping to keep Mandurah's public spaces enjoyable for everyone. 

Compostable bags 

As part of the City's commitment to reducing environmental impacts, compostable dog waste bags are available at selected dispenser locations. 

Compared with traditional single-use plastic bags, compostable alternatives can: 

• Reduce waste sent to landfill 
• Leave fewer harmful residues in the environment 
• Generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions during production 
• Use less water and energy during manufacturing 
• Provide a safer option for wildlife and the environment 

How the dispensers work 

Using the dispensers is easy: 

1. Pull the handles away from the dispenser and tear off a bag 
2. Place the bag over your hand, pick up the waste and reverse the bag 
3. Tie the bag securely and dispose of it in the nearest general waste bin 

Frequently asked questions 

Why aren't the bags replenished more often?

Dog waste bags are restocked by the City's waste contractor during scheduled bin servicing, which generally occurs weekly. While the City provides bags as a helpful backup, owners are responsible for ensuring they have bags available when walking their dogs. 

Why aren't bag dispensers installed on every bin?

The City manages more than 800 public bins across Mandurah. Supplying and maintaining dispensers and bag stock at every location would involve significant costs. Instead, dispensers are installed at selected locations to provide additional support for dog owners who may have forgotten or run out of bags. 

What if the dispenser is empty? 

Although sensors help monitor stock levels, the City cannot guarantee that dispensers will always be full. Dog owners should bring their own waste bags whenever they walk their dogs. Dog waste bags are readily available from supermarkets, pet stores, and other retailers.
